XXXV. IULTCS International Congress Telegram Up-Date January 2019

Verein für Gerberei-Chemie und -Technik e. V.

Meißner Ring 1, 09599 Freiberg, Germany

Freiberg, January 30th, 2019

Nearly 200 abstract submissions received by closing of Call for Papers

The Scientific Committee announces that so far well nearly 200 abstracts have been submitted from around the globe covering all kinds of topics, from fundamental collagen research to all steps of the leather manufacturing process. Since sustainable manufacturing processes and products become more important to the consumer recently, sustainability will have a high significance within the scientific programme: cleaner technologies, close loop processes, utilisation of tannery waste and residues, resource-friendly technologies and a lot more will be presented at the congress. From experience, the machinery and automation session, e.g. with presentations of Lectra and Incotec find great interest among the participants.

The hosts, VGCT and IULTCS, commit to sustainable congress management

Sustainability is a mission not only for the leather industry. The concept of the congress includes a sustainable congress management, which the national host, VGCT, and its Dresden Congress Management Agency, CMD, have implemented right from start. It comprises all areas involved in congress organisation: mobility and traffic, location and accommodation, procurement and services, food and catering, waste management and waste avoidance as well as social aspects. The aim is to reduce the environmental impact to a minimum.

The congress venue, the International Congress Centre Dresden (ICCD), is a state-of-the-art building with excellent technical equipment thus avoiding additional logistics and transportation. ICCD is run by Maritim Hotels Group, which is already engaged in an initiative implementing the sustainability codex of the event industry.

The Maritim Hotel, located in immediate vicinity to the Dresden Congress Centre, is the official conference hotel in which the majority of the participants will be accommodated. More reasonable room contingents are arranged in hotels that are in close proximity to the congress centre or well connected to public transport.

The organiser attach great importance to the commitment of regional and local enterprises when engaging service providers in order to keep communication, transport and logistics routes short. Besides, service providers are requested always to give preference to regional suppliers when procuring materials.

Suppliers of conference catering are encouraged to use regional and seasonal products. Furthermore, it has to be ensured that food products originate from sustainable production and meet ethical requirements in terms of human health, animal welfare and environmental protection.

Furthermore, suppliers and service providers are requested to make their contribution to waste avoidance, for example by avoiding disposable products and packaging as far as possible.

The organiser are contracting service providers and suppliers that guarantee compliance with social standards in their companies and fair and equal payment for their employees.

High Class, Extensive Social Programme in Dresden

As it is the belief of the organisers such an event as the XXXV IULTCS Congress is not only important for scientific networking but also has an “educational” aspect. It always helps and broaden the horizon to become familiar with the local culture of a host country and the way of thinking and living in this particular part of the world. A broader horizon stimulates new thinking. This is motivation to provide an ambitious and extensive social programme included in registration fees.

Opening Ceremony & Welcome Reception

The Congress will start early evening of Tuesday 25th with the official Opening Ceremony at the Dresden International Congress Centre. Formal opening of the Congress will start with the IULTCS anthem, the Water Music by Georg Friedrich Händel, presented by Dresden´s Youth Symphony Orchestra. This Orchestra of about 50 young musicians will also accompany the subsequent Welcoming Addresses of the IULTCS President, representatives of the State Government and the City of Dresden, the IULTCS Merit Award Ceremony and the presentation of the winners of 2019 Young Scientist Grants.

The Opening Ceremony will then merge into a Welcome Reception, an informal get together on Terrace Level of the Congress Centre with a spectacular view on the River Elbe and Baroque Dresden. This will provide the opportunity to explore the venue, to mingle with co-participants and to warm-up for the Congress. The Welcome Reception will also provide some entertainingly presented information on Dresden and the former Kingdom of Saxony.

Elbe River Cruise Night

The city of Dresden stretches out on both sides of the Elbe River and is embedded into picturesque slopes along the River Elbe with wine growing areas through the Elbe valley. The Elbe River snakes its way through the city with a length of 30 kilometers. Nine bridges provide crossing points throughout the city.

After first day´s scientific programme, the Wednesday night river cruise will provide participants with some spectacular views on the city and its garden and wine growing suburbs. The tour starts in the historic centre of the city on the River where the Zwinger, the Semper Opera House, the Royal Palace, Frauenkirche and Brühl's Terrace form the typical “Canaletto View Silhouette”, before heading out of town along exclusive residential areas, castles, Wilhelminian quarters and vineyards.
