The leather industry in Italy and throughout Europe lamented the news that Adolfo Mattirolo died on November 24 at the age of 94.

Always called Comandante Mattirolo because he was an officer in the Italian navy before moving into the leather industry in the 1950s, he served as president of Italian tanning industry association UNIC from 1985-1989 and of European industry representative body COTANCE from 1989-1992.

He ran the family business, Conceria Mesi, a specialist chamois leather manufacturer based in Caselle Torinese in Piemonte. His son, Enrico Mattirolo, and nephew Enrico Tabellini run the business today.
