The Savar tannery estate in Bangladesh, which has been beset by persistent delays, was officially inaugurated on November 6 by the country’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina.

Although not physically present at the site, she used a video message from her office to urge tannery owners to give the required attention to industrial waste management and pollution control, two areas that have already come in for heavy criticism since tanners were ordered to relocate there from the Hazaribagh district.

Prime Minister Hasina insisted the Bangladeshi government has taken steps to set up sufficient waste management systems at all industrial sites, although there have been reports of common effluent treatment at the Savar tanning cluster causing pollution to the nearby Dhaleswari river.

This is believed to be the result of the central effluent treatment plant not yet being fully operational. The solid waste disposal system there is also said to not be functioning.
