Half of counterfeit footwear purchases are made by mistake, says Red Points

Almost half of all counterfeit footwear purchases are made by mistake, according to a survey from brand protection firm Red Points.

Nearly half (48 percent) of respondents to the survey admitted to purchasing fake shoes online when originally searching for the real product, with only nine percent initially looking to buy counterfeits.

Overall, 20 percent of survey respondents had bought fake footwear online at some point in the past.

The survey showed that 61 percent of respondents would consider purchasing footwear via social media, which Red Points said could put them at greater risk of being targeted by counterfeiters, while 49 percent of respondents said that they would buy fake footwear if the discount was big enough.

According to Red Points, the total global market value of the counterfeit footwear industry is in the region of $12 billion per year, which is around 10 percent of the total global market value.

Commenting on the survey findings, Danae Vara Borrell, vice president of products at Red Points, said: “The survey findings are truly alarming and should come as a real warning for shoppers and brands alike of the danger of social media being used by counterfeiters to dupe consumers.

“In fact, our analysts often find that many counterfeiters use social media to promote ‘offers’ of their counterfeit products, driving consumers to their listings on more trusted ecommerce platforms or to fake domains to lure shoppers into buying knock-off products or phishing scams.”

He added: “Plus, counterfeiters are increasing using genuine product images for their listing and creating sophisticated websites made to look like brands’ official channels making it harder than ever for consumers to spot potential scams.”

“So unless shoppers start adopting a cautious approach to online shopping, and brands start proactively monitoring their listings on both e-commerce sites and social media, businesses will continue to lose sales revenue to counterfeit goods.”
