The new president of COTANCE, Andreas Kindermann, led an industry delegation in a discussion about the identity of leather with representatives of the European Commission on July 5.

Accompanied by Sophie Hivert, Luca Boltri and Kerry Senior, representing national leather bodies from France, Italy and the UK respectively, and by COTANCE secretary-general, Gustavo Gonzalez-Quijano, Mr Kindermann met senior officials from the European Commission’s directorate for internal market, industry, entrepreneurship and SMEs. Mr Kindermann emphasised the importance for Europe’s leather industry to have a legislative instrument that protects leather’s identity and prevents companies selling synthetic materials from misleading consumers by passing their products off as leather. The new COTANCE president assured the European Commission officials that the industry stands ready to offer any assistance necessary in taking a legislative process forward to protect leather’s reputation. The leather industry delegation then handed over detailed information on the subject and the two groups agreed to meet again after the summer to discuss next steps.
