Brazilian footwear manufacturers exported 30.47 million pairs of shoes during the first quarter of 2018, a drop of 2.7% compared to the same period of last year, according to the latest figures from footwear association Abicalçados.

The total value of these exports was just over $250 million, which represents a fall of 3.4% year on year.

The struggles for Brazilian footwear in the US market continued. After seeing exports to this market fall by more than 14% in both volume and value in 2017, the decline was extended in the first quarter of 2018 with a drop of 11.5% in volume and of 22.6% in value.

This meant Argentina took over as Brazil’s most important export market (in terms of dollar value) in the first three months of 2018. It imported 2.4 million pairs of shoes from Brazil for a value of $39.1 million, respective increases of 14.4% and 9.8% compared to the same period of last year.

France remains the third most important export market, taking 2.76 million pairs of Brazilian shoes for a value of $18.26 million, respective increases of 52.4% and 19.3%.
