President of the Italian footwear manufacturers’ association, Assocalzaturifici, Annarita Pilotti, has said her member companies, mostly high-end Italian shoe brands, are “finally seeing an upswing” in orders from Russia and the surrounding region.

She explained: “Consumers here are increasingly aware of price, but still appreciate the quality and excellence of Italian shoemaking. And while we remain prudent, we in the industry look forward to upcoming seasons with confidence, aware that there is greater stability in the market.”

Recent statistics on the performance of Italian footwear in the region bear this out. The average price per pair has fallen by 10% to €54.8, but the volume of Italian shoes sold in Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan in the first seven months of 2017 rose by more than 25% to 5 million pairs.

Assocal has said the most recent editions of the events it holds in this region, Obuv’ Mir Koži in Moscow and Shoes from Italy in Almaty and Kiev, drew “an excellent response” in terms of participation and buyer attendance.
