A research project to establish a comprehensive and verifiable leather traceability platform has received a boost after two tanning groups signed up as sponsors.

The project was jointly launched in April 2017 by the BLC Leather Technology Centre and Applied DNA Sciences, a provider of DNA-based product authentication solutions.

The platform will be based on Applied DNA’s SigNature T-based system, which is already used in the cotton, wool and synthetic textiles industries. The research project will demonstrate the platform across the entire leather supply chain, from farm to finished product.

The two news sponsors are the Scottish Leather Group, which operates four leather manufacturing subsidiaries including Bridge of Weir Leather and Andrew Muirhead & Son, and Tong Hong Tannery, a tanning group that specialises in split leather and operates manufacturing plants in Vietnam, China and Indonesia.

"The addition of these new sponsors reflects the leather industry's growing interest in a 100% secure supply chain for its products and an ongoing commitment to taking positive action to deal with environmental sustainability, animal welfare and supply chain risk management," said Tony Benson, Applied DNA’s managing director for the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.
